A message from Bishop McKenna about the death of Father Doug Akehurst cm
With the Vincentians, the community of St. Stanislaus College and people and priests across the Diocese of Bathurst, I am mourning the death of Father Doug Akehurst and entrust him to the love of the Lord he served with all his heart.
I first met Doug when he was Rector of the Pacific Regional Seminary in Suva. He was a dynamo. He later welcomed me to Stannies and Bathurst when I came here and was a constant friend and source of affirmation, ideas and inspiration. As a College President and member of the Bishop’s Council of Priests, he lived out the Vincentian charism of being truly a part of the local church.
Faced with the burden of serious illness, Doug did not step back from continuing his mission as a priest and educator. He was an example of St Paul’s declaration “When I am weak, I am strong!” Urged on by the love of Christ, Doug used and transcended his physical limitations to let God work and let us see God at work in him. His hope and courage brought out the best in others and pointed to their origin in God.
May Father Doug Akehurst rest in peace and rise in glory.
