Blessing of Icon for Good Shepherd Vocations Network - Bathurst

The Good Shepherd Vocations Network (GSVN) commenced in the diocese with a small group of Bathurst parishioners meeting with the aim of promoting priestly, religious and lay vocations. Their inspiration came from the Serran movement which has a long history of prayerful and practical support for priests, religious and seminarians. As the name suggests, the goal is for a network of parish groups throughout our diocese.

The name chosen for this network is reflected in the following words:

The compassionate gaze of Christ, the risen Good Shepherd, is the origin of the gift and mystery of the vocation to pastoral ministry in the Church. (Pope John Paul II, 2004)

Recently Fr Pat O'Regan blessed members of the group along with the beautiful icon of the Good Shepherd which was specially commissioned in Romania. The artist is Anca Demenescu.

Holy hour followed with the special intention of praying for Rev Reynold as he prepares for ordination to the priesthood.

GSVN members pray Evening Prayer in the Cathedral every Friday prior to Mass. Attendance has grown steadily with many parishioners joining in prayer for vocations and especially to support our seminarians as they continue their formation. The group meets regularly and there is a particular emphasis on praying the Prayer of the Church.

In July members travelled to Mudgee to speak at a meeting about GSVN. The parishioners of Mudgee and Gulgong have commenced a group and we welcome them, as we together, pray for vocations.

Blessed John Paul II used the title Mary, the sweet Mother of the Good Shepherd. Recognising the importance of her intercession in praying for vocations, across GSVN, we adopt the title Mary, Mother of the Good Shepherd as our patron and guide for living.
