A message to our Muslim Brothers and Sisters from Bishop McKenna

Dear Muslim Brothers and Sisters,

With respect and friendship, I write on behalf of the Australian Catholic Bishops Commission for Christian Unity and Interreligious Dialogue to send greetings of peace on the occasion of Id al-Fitr, 1441 H. / 2020 A.D.

A few months ago, on the first anniversary of the Abu Dhabi “Document on Human Fraternity”, I had the joy of co-signing an Australian Christian-Muslim Interfaith Commitment Statement pledging to promote that fraternity in our country.

Since then, as we know, the whole world has shared in the dreadful experience of the Covid 19 pandemic, which has taken lives, livelihoods and health from many and disrupted social and economic life for us all.

Our places of worship were closed for many weeks, though our prayers and works of service continued. As mosques and churches now begin to reopen, the message for Ramadan from the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, which speaks of the importance of protecting these “houses of prayer”, has special resonance. This is a protection we wish to see, not only for ourselves, but for all religions.

May your celebration of Id al-Fitr this year be an occasion of peace and joy.

With fraternal greetings,

Most Reverend Michael McKenna
Bishop of Bathurst
