There’s something inviting about a BBQ. It brings people together, invites conversation and – with a bit of grace – can be the start of something life-changing.

That was certainly the case at the Cathedral Parish on the Federal election day, where a humble sausage sizzle became an unexpected encounter with the Holy Spirit. Set up as a fundraiser for the mission of the Cathedral parish, the day had all the familiar trimmings – friendly faces, sizzling sausages and a vibrant atmosphere. But alongside the food, there was another invitation being offered.

As voters queued for their democracy sausage, parishioners offered more than just lunch. They shared a smile, a word of welcome and an invitation to ‘Alpha’ – a program designed to help people explore life, faith and meaning in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

Each person who purchased a sausage was offered a brief explanation of Alpha and handed an invitation card. The result? Several people who hadn’t been attending Mass decided to sign up for Alpha. It was a quiet but powerful moment of evangelisation – a joyful, gentle step towards building an invitational culture within the parish.

The day was a tangible expression of Pope Francis’ call for missionary discipleship – to go out, encounter others and offer the joy of the Gospel. It was also a practical reminder that evangelisation isn’t always about big events. Sometimes, it starts with a sausage and a smile.

Alpha continues to grow across the Diocese, with programs currently, or soon to start again, in Orange, Blayney, Cowra and Oberon.
