On Wednesday 30 April at 5.45pm, the Cathedral of St Michael and St John in Bathurst became a place of quiet reverence as faithful gathered to celebrate a special Mass in memory of Pope Francis. The liturgy followed the same readings and prayers used at the Pope’s funeral Mass celebrated on Saturday in St Peter’s Square, Rome.

Presided over by Fr Karl Sinclair, Fr Paul Devitt and Fr Martin O’Mahony, the Mass featured a homily from Fr Paul Devitt, Vicar General and Episcopal Vicar. In his reflection, Fr Paul spoke of Pope Francis’ enduring commitment to Gospel values—highlighting his focus on mercy, ecological conversion and outreach to those on the margins of society.

Fr Paul reminded the congregation that Pope Francis consistently pointed the Church—and the world—towards Jesus Christ. His life and papacy were rooted in a deep desire to reflect the face of Christ, especially to those who were poor, excluded or forgotten. He challenged all people to recognise the dignity of every person, to care for creation, and to understand that all of us stand in need of forgiveness.

As the Diocese continues its journey through the Jubilee Year 2025, marked by the theme Pilgrims of Hope, this Mass served as a poignant reminder of the Pope’s invitation to live the Gospel with courage and love. The faithful left the Cathedral inspired by Pope Francis’ legacy—a legacy that never ceased to direct our gaze to Christ.
