Special Religious Education (SRE) in State Schools

The Catholic Diocese of Bathurst is an Approved Provider for Special Religious Education (SRE) in state schools. We are committed to ensuring that all SRE teachers are appropriately authorised, trained, and supported in delivering religious education to students in a manner consistent with our values. Below is essential information regarding teacher authorisation, curriculum, complaints procedures, and code of conduct.

Authorisation of SRE Teachers

All SRE teachers must meet the following minimum requirements before being authorised to teach in state schools:

  1. Application Process: Prospective SRE teachers must submit an application that includes background checks, such as the Working with Children Check (WWCC), and provide evidence of their qualifications. standards.catholic.org.au
  2. Training and Qualifications: All SRE teachers are required to undergo initial and ongoing training. This includes child protection training, classroom management skills, and familiarisation with the SRE curriculum. Ongoing professional development is encouraged.
  3. Authorisation: After meeting the necessary requirements, each SRE teacher receives an authorisation card, which must be carried while teaching. This card confirms the teacher’s compliance with all diocesan and legal requirements.

Code of Conduct for SRE Teachers

SRE teachers are expected to adhere to the following the Diocesan Code of Conduct as well the Department of Education’s Code of Conduct. Also to ensure the safety and well-being of students, maintain professional integrity, and uphold the values of the Catholic Diocese.

Failure to comply with this Code of Conduct may result in disciplinary actions, including suspension or termination of authorisation to teach SRE.

Joint Denominational SRE

In schools where Christian denominations are taught together, a program that has been approved by all providers is used. The Diocese of Bathurst uses the following programs for Joint Denominational SRE. Please contact your local school or SRE coordinator to confirm which program is being used:
