Catholic chaplains from across New South Wales gathered at Baulkham Hills from 29 September to 1 October for their biannual three-day conference and dinner—an opportunity for reflection, formation and fellowship.

Chaplains Sarkis, Jude and Abraham represented the Diocese of Bathurst, with Fran offering her apologies. Together with fellow Corrective Services Chaplains, they spent time considering the joys and challenges of ministering in correctional centres and offering support post-release.

Held in a spirit of collaboration and prayer, the gathering focused on several key areas: the ongoing formation of chaplains in their pastoral ministry, the importance of self-care in demanding settings, and the pressing need for holistic post-release support for those who have served their sentence.

Chaplains were also updated on recent changes and developments within the NSW corrections system, helping to ensure that ministry remains responsive and informed. The sharing of stories and strategies further encouraged a deep sense of mutual support and community among those who walk with some of society’s most vulnerable.

As Jesus said in Matthew 25:36, “I was in prison and you visited me.” Chaplains serve as a living response to this Gospel call—bringing the light of Christ to people often forgotten.

If you or someone you know is interested in supporting our chaplains—either through prayer, practical assistance or post-release ministry—please contact Deacon Josh Clayton via email at mrd@bathurst.catholic.org.au.

We also invite all across the Diocese to pray for the ongoing ministry of our chaplains—that they may continue to be instruments of mercy, healing and hope to those they serve.
