Recently, the Chaplains serving in Corrective facilities across the Diocese of Bathurst came together for an important gathering to discuss their ongoing ministry and explore ways to enhance the support they provide to those in need. These Chaplains play a vital role in offering pastoral care, spiritual guidance, and a listening ear to inmates across the diocese and staff of Corrective centres, often being a source of hope and compassion in challenging environments.

The Chaplains, including Sr Virginia McGrath rsj at Lithgow Correctional Centre, Sarkis Achmar at Bathurst Correctional Centre, Jude Besterwitch at Wellington Correctional Centre, and Fran Schubert at Macquarie Correctional Centre, gathered to reflect on their work and to address Practical matters that impact their ministry. The gathering was an opportunity to share experiences, discuss challenges, and ensure their services remain effective and relevant to the needs of the people they minister to.

Bishop Michael McKenna, who has long supported the Chaplains in their efforts, spent time with them during the gathering. He engaged in discussions about areas where support may be needed and thanked them for their unwavering dedication to this critical ministry. The Bishop highlighted the importance of their work in transforming lives and offering hope to those behind bars. Bishop McKenna makes it a priority to celebrate Mass in each of the Correctional centres across the diocese once a year. In the coming months, Macquarie and Wellington Correctional Centres will be next to receive a visit from Bishop McKenna.

The Diocese of Bathurst is grateful for the work they do and the lives they touch, often in unseen but deeply impactful ways. Their ministry reminds us all of the Gospel call to care for the least among us.
