On 11 May, the Diocese of Bathurst joins with the universal Church in marking Good Shepherd Sunday—a day dedicated to praying for vocations and supporting the formation of future priests.

The image of Christ as the Good Shepherd speaks to the heart of our faith: one who knows His flock, calls them by name and leads with compassion and sacrifice. It is also an invitation to each of us to respond to God’s call in our own lives—and to encourage others to do the same.

This day holds particular importance for our Diocese, as we accompany five seminarians on their path to priesthood. Their journey is one of prayer, study and service, guided by a deep desire to live out the Gospel and minister to God’s people.

Forming a priest takes time, support and significant resources. In 2025, the Diocese will contribute over $250,000 towards the education and formation of our seminarians. This includes accommodation, tuition, pastoral placements and ongoing spiritual guidance.

The annual Good Shepherd Sunday Appeal helps meet these costs and ensures that no young man is prevented from exploring his vocation due to financial barriers. It is also a way for parish communities to take an active role in nurturing vocations.

All Catholics are encouraged to take part in this mission by:

• Praying for vocations in families, schools and parishes
• Actively encouraging young people to consider the call to priesthood or consecrated life
• Contributing generously to the Good Shepherd Sunday Appeal
