Thursday 22 January 2026 has been declared a National Day of Mourning to honour the 15 lives lost and all affected by the Bondi Beach terrorist attack.

The theme chosen by the Chabad community in Bondi—Light will win: a gathering of unity and remembrance—invites Australians to stand together in grief and hope.

On the evening of 22 January, buildings across Canberra, New South Wales and beyond will be illuminated as symbols of unity. A commemorative installation, 15 Pillars of Light, will be displayed nationally, each pillar representing a life lost.

At 7.01pm AEDT, all Australians are encouraged to observe one minute of silence. People are also invited to:

  • Light a candle on their doorstep or windowsill
  • Share a meal with family or neighbours of all backgrounds
  • Undertake a simple mitzvah—an act of kindness—in honour of the victims

The Bondi Beach Attack Memorial, organised by Chabad of Bondi, will be livestreamed for all to join in prayer and remembrance. While not a public holiday, flags will fly at half-mast across Australia.

Let us respond to tragedy with compassion, unity and faith that light will indeed overcome darkness.
