Pope Leo XIV has begun a ten-day visit to Africa from 13 -23 April 2026, his second journey outside of Europe since his election in 2025. Visiting Algeria, Cameroon, Angola and Equatorial Guinea, the Holy Father is focusing on peace, migration, family life and care for creation. He will deliver 25 addresses and meet with communities in parishes, hospitals and prisons.

The visit is historic, marking the first papal visit to Algeria and highlighting the importance of Christian-Muslim dialogue. During the visit, Pope Leo XIV will visit the ancient city of Hippo, now called Annaba, where St Augustine served as Bishop from 396 until his death in 430.

Africa is home to around 280 million Catholics and is the fastest-growing region of the Church. The visit recognises this growth and affirms Africa as a vital source of faith for the global Church.

Continuing the legacy of Pope Paul VI, Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis, this journey reflects the Church’s mission to walk with people and bring hope to the world.
