The Right Rev Mathew Quinn started the Catholic Diocese of Bathurst weekly newspaper The Record in July 1877 which ran until December 1899. A fire in the printery halted production, with a number of issues printed in the late 1920’s.

Bishop Thomas founded the Catholic Observer in July 1967 which continued in newspaper form until December 2010 when it became a quarterly magazine.
