Monsignor Peter Shannon, who served faithfully as a priest of the Diocese of Bathurst for 66 years, died at St Catherine’s Aged Care Facility, Bathurst on 3rd December 2023.

He arrived in the Diocese of Bathurst from his home in County Clare, Ireland on 20th November 1956, following his ordination to the priesthood by Bishop O’Reilly on 17th June that year.

Over the following 47 years Mons Shannon ministered in seven parishes in the Diocese. He was an Assistant Priest in Orange, Wellington and Oberon, Administrator of Coonamble and Dubbo, and Parish Priest of Dubbo, West Orange, Wellington, Lithgow and Canowindra.

Mons served for a time as Vicar General of the Diocese, was a Diocesan Consultor and member of the Council of Priests.  He was also Chaplain to the YCW and Spiritual Director of the St Vincent de Paul Society.

When he retired in 2003 he moved to St Catherine’s, where he continued his ministry with the residents and staff until his health prevented that.

May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
