Josephite Fusion Celebration

Cold hands and warm hearts was the order of the day as the Sisters of St. Joseph, Perthville reunited with the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart in Bathurst on Saturday 3rd May 2014.

The Mass and luncheon to celebrate the historic occasion was held in the MacKillop College Hall - changed from Perthville due to inclement weather.

The 'fusion', brings together once again the Sisters who were once one order, founded by St. Mary of the Cross MacKillop and Father Julian Tenison Woods.

Having travelled separate journeys for the past 141 years, the Sisters decided the time was right to strengthen their unity as Sisters of St. Joseph and after consultation with Bishop McKenna, applied to Rome for permission for the fusion, which was granted in March.

In his homily, Bishop Michael McKenna said, "There is thanksgiving for the past, whose goodness will endure. There is grief at saying goodbye. There is hope that God is doing something new".

While In practice, the Perthville Congregation has now ceased to exist as a separate Institute, the Sisters will continue predominantly to live and minister within the Diocese of Bathurst.

"Most of the Sisters will continue to live in the Bathurst Diocese and continue their long and faithful relationships with the people, the priests and the Bishop of the Diocese", said Sister Monica Cavanagh, Congregational Leader. I am delighted to extend a very warm welcome to our Perthville Sisters and appreciate their willingness to welcome us into their lives".
