Congratulations to the seven children who recently received the Sacrament of First Holy Communion at the 5pm Mass at St Michael’s Manildra.
Congratulations also to Mason who received a special blessing at Mass. Fr Antony celebrated the Mass which was followed by a BBQ in the school grounds. Thank you to Lucy, a former student of St Joseph’s Manildra, for making the spectacular cake and to the P and F for organising the BBQ. It was a fabulous combined school and parish event with over 100 in attendance.

We were recently lucky enough to have our School Chaplain visit our Year 4, 5 & 6 classes to talk about the exciting opportunity of becoming an altar server within our faith community. Fr Diep talked about his own experiences in this ministry when he was a child and how he hoped that by our students taking up this important role in our parish that they could help strengthen the connection with God in themselves and others. Exisiting Altar Servers from our school shared their own positive experiences and reflections as well. Please remember that any remaining Expression of Interest Forms are due by Tuesday this week.

Last week students, families and teachers from across the Diocese came together for the annual Spelling Bee Championships, hosted again with great thanks by St Mary’s Catholic School Wellington. This year was particularly special, marking the 10th anniversary of the Spelling Bee, which continues to be a thrilling event for all and a challenging opportunity for students to showcase their knowledge of letter/sound representations, word origins, memory and much more through the rigour of spelling. The two days had audience members on the edge of their seats as the best spellers from across the diocese proudly displayed their talents.
We commend all our students’ support for one another as they acted as wonderful ambassadors for their schools. Congratulations to the stage winners, we are already looking forward to next year!

On Saturday Ethan and Cody received the sacrament of Confirmation. The boys were confirmed by Bishop Michael. Thank you to those who joined us for mass and cake; Bishop Michael, Fr Greg, their sponsors, families and community members.

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Manildra

Did you know that we have a student at our school who has had a book written about him? That’s pretty special, right? At St Joseph’s CPS, we think so……

St Joseph’s CPS is grateful to Jackson Randell and his family for presenting to the school a published book about how every person is special and unique. The book is titled “My Friend Jackson” and was written by Melinda and Sharon Wasson. Sharon is Jackson’s grandmother who has worked in early childhood education for over thirty years and is now a kindergarten teacher. Together with her daughter Melinda, this Grandmother and Aunty team combined their talents of writing and illustrating to create this extraordinary book about their beloved Jackson. It highlights the fact that we are all physically different, but in our uniqueness, we are still capable in so many ways. The inside cover invites us to read the book, stating:  “My friend Jackson was born super special!!!”

It is a wonderful resource demonstrating tolerance, acceptance and respect. It reinforces what we believe at St Joseph’s CPS, we are all respected, valued and quite simply… SUPER SPECIAL !!!

“My Friend Jackson” will be available to borrow from the St Joseph’s CPS Library. Details to purchase Jackson’s book will be available soon.

A fantastic day was had at Coolah for the Primary Diocesan Cross Country Carnival on Tuesday 3 May. Thank you to the Sacred Heart Principal Kylie Scott and Convenors Narelle Kitchen and Vanessa Pettit for facilitating a successful and fun event for all students. Also thank you to the Sacred Heart Coolah P&F, Judy and Peter Manning and the many volunteers who helped the day run smoothly.
There were some outstanding efforts on the tough track. We wish all the successful runners the best of luck at the Polding Cross Country at Eastern Creek in June.

St Raphael Cowra’s Year 5 enjoyed Mass in the Chapel with Father Laurie.

Thank you Miss Slaven and Miss Downes for assisting us with our preparations.

Today  St Joseph’s Catholic School Oberon held their Spelling Bee Competition and proved that they have many talented spellers at St. Joseph’s. Congratulations to the following students who will now go on to Wellington to represent St Joseph’s School at the Diocesan Spelling Bee.
Stage 2 – Max Behan and Gianni Galliotas
Stage 3 – Kyran Hogan and Charlie Brown
Primary school teams from Lismore, Maitland Newcastle, Armidale, Wilcannia Forbes, Broken Bay and Bathurst played rugby league, netball, soccer and hockey recently in Bathurst. The day was a huge success with students playing in great spirit and the selectors having a difficult time choosing strong teams for the PSSA Championships.
There were a few nerve-racking days prior to the day with the rain and the chance of wet ovals, thankfully the day finished in brilliant sunshine. A big thank you to all involved with the trials and best of luck to all those selected for Polding teams!
This week two groups of students commenced a Cultural Program with Tim Naden from Goanna Woodworks. The Goanna Woodworks program is about sharing knowledge, empowering others and building relationships through art, woodwork, yarning and laughter.
Our Year 7/8 group started working on their personal artwork, telling their own stories using Aboriginal symbols that will be created on their very own possum skin which they received.
Our Year 9/10 group selected their own raw Didgeridoo and commenced cleaning and preparing them ready for personal artwork in the coming weeks.
All these students will get to keep their pieces and we look forward to seeing their final pieces and hearing their stories. Our school is very grateful to have Tim on board and looks forward to working together in the future when more students will get the chance to participate in this amazing program.

MacKillop held their annual Cross Country on Tuesday 26th April. The 3.75km course began on the Mackillop Athletics Track, progressing around the fields at Proctor Park and finishing at Police Paddock. Congratulations to all the competitive and non-competitive participants who joined in on the event. Thank you to Mr Knight and 10 PASS classes for running the event.

Year 12 student Riley Wake is a member of the 2022 Penrith Panthers SG Ball Rugby League side. Former St Johns College students Aston Warwick and Fletcher Haycock are also members of this Panthers squad. This week, Riley and his Panthers teammates are preparing to play in the SG Ball Grand Final against the Roosters. We congratulate Riley on the successful season he has had this year and wish him all the best for the Grand Final this weekend.

What an activity! The aim of our most recent Project Compassion activity was to raise awareness of the hardships of others who have to walk to collect water each day. After experiencing 10 to 20 minutes of carrying 2L, 3L or 5L bottles of water, and some students testing their strength by lifting 15 or 20L containers, SJP students began to truly understand the impacts on those people around the world who have to walk to rivers and streams to collect water. This activity certainly assisted teachers when explaining the true meanings of compassion and empathy.

Here are a few comments that were made by students, after we  ‘Walked for Water’:

‘It was really hard because the milk bottles full of water were so heavy.”

Josie, KB

“When I was carrying the water, it felt light to start with, but if I had to carry it longer it would have got too heavy.”

Sasha, 1G

“It was tiring and hard, it made my hands hurt.”

Elouise, 2G

“I feel bad for the kids who have to collect the water and sometimes they have to make 2 trips!”

Flynn, 3B

Walking for water helped me realise how hard it is for people to carry 5kms or more every day. I give huge respect to them!”

Owen, 4G

I feel really shocked but also really lucky and fortunate. It’s absolutely crazy that they have to walk to collect water and I feel bad for the kids my age that have to go on a big journey, sometimes without shoes, just to collect water!”

Taylah, 5G

“Now that I’ve done the Walk for Water, I’ve realised that kids aren’t as lucky and fortunate as us and we should be grateful. Project Compassion gives opportunities to kids around the world to be as lucky as us.”

Holly, 5/6R

After running the ‘Walk for Water Day’, many students were motivated to donate more to Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion, with our goal to reach over $2000 in donations.
